Historic delivery for EXMAR: First ever dual-fuel ammonia oceangoing vessel
Antwerp, Belgium – EXMAR is proud to announce the historic delivery of MGC ANTWERPEN, the first oceangoing vessel powered by a dual-fuel ammonia engine.
As a gas shipowner and infrastructure developer, EXMAR is taking a very significant step in low-carbon shipping with the delivery of our newbuild Midsize Gas Carrier named ANTWERPEN.
This milestone marks a decisive step forward in the decarbonisation of shipping, positioning EXMAR and partners at the forefront of sustainable maritime innovation.
Developed in close collaboration with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, WinGD, Nord Gas Solutions (formerly Wärtsilä Gas Solutions), and Lloyd’s Register, ANTWERPEN is capable of carrying up to 46,000 m³ of ammonia or LPG and trading with close to zero emissions when using low-carbon ammonia fuel. The vessel meets and exceeds current IMO emissions reduction targets, reducing greenhouse gases by up to 90% compared to conventional ships.
Operational safety has been a key focus throughout development, drawing on EXMAR’s four decades of experience transporting ammonia and other liquefied gases. With comprehensive crew training, robust risk assessments, and input from leading partners and the Belgian administration, ammonia propulsion is now realized and regulatory frameworks are established for safe operations.

The newbuild is the first in a series of four ammonia dual-fuel midsize gas carriers, each named after a Belgian city. With the delivery of ANTWERPEN, EXMAR continues its tradition of innovation and its leadership in the maritime transport and handling of ammonia.

Anvers, Belgique – EXMAR est fier d’annoncer la livraison historique du navire MGC ANTWERPEN, le premier navire de transport maritime propulsé par un moteur à ammoniac (dual-fuel).
En tant qu’armateur spécialisé dans le transport maritime de gaz et le développement d’infrastructures offshore stratégiques, EXMAR accomplit une avancée significative vers le transport maritime bas carbone, avec la livraison de son nouveau navire gazier de taille moyenne (MGC).Cette étape majeure marque une avancée décisive dans la décarbonation de la navigation, positionnant EXMAR et ses partenaires au premier plan de l’innovation maritime durable.
Développé en étroite collaboration avec HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, WinGD, Nord Gas Solutions (anciennement Wärtsilä Gas Solutions) et Lloyd’s Register, l’ANTWERPEN peut transporter jusqu’à 46.000 m³ d’ammoniac ou de GPL et peut fonctionner avec des émissions proches de zéro lorsqu’il utilise de l’ammoniac bas carbone comme carburant. Le navire répond, et même surpasse, les objectifs actuels de réduction des émissions de l’OMI, réduisant les gaz à effet de serre jusqu’à 90 % par rapport aux navires conventionnels.
La sécurité opérationnelle a été une priorité à chaque étape du développement de EXMAR, capitalisant sur ses quatre décennies d’expérience dans le transport de l’ammoniac et d’autres gaz liquéfiés.
S’appuyant sur la formation complète des équipages, des évaluations des risques robustes et l’appui des partenaires clés ainsi que de l’administration belge, la propulsion à l’ammoniac devient aujourd’hui une réalité et les cadres réglementaires sont établis pour garantir des opérations en toute sécurité.

Historische oplevering voor EXMAR Allereerste dual-fuel ammoniak-zeeschip
Antwerpen, België – EXMAR kondigt met trots de historische oplevering aan van de MGC ANTWERPEN, het eerste zeeschip dat wordt aangedreven door een dual-fuel ammoniakmotor.
Als reders van gastankers en ontwikkelaar van infrastructuur zet EXMAR een zeer belangrijke stap in de richting van koolstofarme scheepvaart met de oplevering van deze nieuwe gastanker, de ANTWERPEN. Deze mijlpaal betekent een beslissende stap voorwaarts in de decarbonisatie van de scheepvaart en plaatst EXMAR en zijn partners aan het voorfront van duurzame maritieme innovatie.
Het schip ANTWERPEN is in nauwe samenwerking met HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, WinGD, Nord Gas Solutions (voorheen Wärtsilä Gas Solutions) en Lloyd’s Register ontwikkeld en kan tot 46.000 m³ ammoniak of LPG vervoeren en bij gebruik van koolstofarme ammoniakbrandstof vrijwel emissievrij varen. Het schip voldoet aan de huidige IMO-emissiereductiedoelstellingen en overtreft deze zelfs met een vermindering van broeikasgassen tot 90% in vergelijking met conventionele schepen.
Operationele veiligheid stond te allen tijde centraal tijdens de ontwikkeling, waarbij werd geput uit EXMAR’s vier decennia aan ervaring in het vervoer van ammoniak en andere vloeibare gassen. Dankzij uitgebreide training van de bemanning, doortastend risicobeoordelingen, input van toonaangevende partners en een nauwe samenwerking met de Belgische overheid is ammoniakaandrijving nu gerealiseerd en zijn regelgevende kaders vastgesteld voor veilige operaties.
