Creating sustainable, pioneering solutions

Business security, profitability and creating genuine value for all our stakeholders are EXMAR priorities. EXMAR has always combined these ambitions with an inherent sense of responsibility, and with a great capacity for innovation. By focussing on industry-leading innovations in the oil and gas industry, based on the complex needs of our customers, EXMAR develops sustainable, pioneering solutions in the energy supply. These innovations are created by our specialised and motivated employees, and EXMAR is committed to the continuous development of our staff on shore and at sea, as well as nurturing good relationships with our business partners.

EXMAR is constantly developing and adopting new technological advances in shipping to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

The new EXMAR Midsize LPG/NH3 Vessels: Leading the way in emission reduction.

EXMAR is set to expand its fleet with twelve ultra-modern midsize gas carriers designed for efficiency and emission reduction. These vessels, ordered from HD Hyundai Mipo (HMD) and Jiangsu Yangzi-Mitsui (YAMIC), benefit from EXMAR’s active involvement in the conceptualization and design process. The primary focus has been on optimizing operational efficiency, enhancing safety, and maximizing flexibility in lowering emissions.

Key sustainability features include:

  • Enhanced Efficiency: With optimized hull lines and propeller designs, the new Midsize series requires less power compared to their predecessors, leading to greater fuel efficiency.

  • LPG Dual-Fuel Technology: Two 46,000m³, four 41,000m³, and two 49,000m³ midsize gas carriers (MGCs) will feature LPG dual-fuel main engines, coupled with a shaft generator. This advanced system reduces CO2-equivalent emissions by 15% compared to conventional fuel-powered vessels.

  • NH3 Dual-Fuel Technology: Four 46,000m³ MGCs will be equipped with cutting-edge NH3 dual-fuel main engines, which, along with the shaft generator, slash CO2-equivalent emissions by 90% compared to conventional alternatives.

  • Particulate Matter Reduction: The use of gas as fuel, whether LPG or NH3, cuts particulate matter emissions by 90%, contributing to cleaner air and a greener environment.
Optimising fleet energy efficiency

Optimising energy efficiency is embedded both in the design and engineering of new assets by EXMAR, and in the operation and maintenance activities for the managed fleet. Continual improvement in energy efficiency performance is achieved through:

  • Designing energy efficient floating assets
  • Optimizing ship’s operations by route optimization, speed management, and by specific cargo and engine operational measures
  • Conduct of regular maintenance, ensuring that systems are well-maintained and operating at peak efficiency
  • Structured monitoring of energy efficiency performance
Protecting the marine environment

EXMAR endeavours to protect the marine environment by complying with international and local regulations and implementing effective measures to prevent pollution to sea, to air and to shore, and aims to continuously improve its environmental performance at sea by:

  • Investing in research and development of innovative technologies, particularly focussing on ammonia as clean fuel of the future.
  • Applying a lifecycle perspective as from the design and engineering phase of new assets and continued during the operation and maintenance of the managed floating infrastructure.
  • Implementing procedures on the managed floating assets to prevent and respond to marine pollution, including measures on hazardous materials and waste management, ballast water and bio-fouling management, emergency response planning, and crew training.
  • Structured monitoring of environmental performance
Harnessing the Power of Ammonia for a Cleaner Future.

EXMAR is committed to leading the charge towards a sustainable maritime industry. By investing heavily in research and development, we’re at the forefront of innovative technologies, particularly focusing on ammonia as a clean and efficient fuel source.

Why Ammonia?

  • Zero Carbon Emissions: Ammonia offers the potential for a carbon-neutral shipping industry.
  • High Energy Density: It provides a high energy-to-weight ratio, making it an efficient fuel option.
  • Existing Infrastructure: Ammonia can leverage existing maritime infrastructure, reducing the need for significant new investments.

A Holistic Approach to Environmental Stewardship

At EXMAR, we believe in a comprehensive approach to environmental protection. From the design stage of our assets to their daily operations, we implement stringent measures to minimize our environmental footprint:

  • Lifecycle Assessment: We evaluate the environmental impact of our projects throughout their entire lifespan, ensuring sustainable practices.
  • Pollution Prevention: Our robust procedures and training programs equip our teams to prevent and respond to marine pollution effectively.
  • Continuous Improvement: We are dedicated to ongoing innovation and improvement, seeking new ways to reduce our environmental impact.

Join Us in the Transition to a Cleaner Future

By choosing EXMAR, you’re partnering with a company that is committed to a cleaner, more sustainable maritime industry. Together, we can harness the power of molecules like ammonia to create a brighter future for our planet.

We believe that education and knowledge-sharing enables communities and individuals to increase self-reliance.

As part of the actions aimed at leaving a positive impact on our communities, EXMAR and its affiliates have been and are supporting cultural or charitable associations. • LAB school Sint-Niklaas represents an innovative educational model designed for general secondary education. Rather than serving as an alternative method of instruction, LAB provides a fundamental update to traditional secondary education, grounded in contemporary educational knowledge and tailored to meet the demands of our time. The objective of LAB is to reinvigorate education, fostering a greater enthusiasm for learning among students while simultaneously rekindling teachers’ motivation to teach.

To achieve this, LAB schools employ a pedagogical framework founded on three essential pillars: theory, experience, and personal knowledge. A harmonious balance among these elements is crucial for the comprehensive acquisition of knowledge. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of autonomous teacher teams and shared leadership. By reorganizing our school structure and enhancing collaboration, we are better equipped to address challenges effectively. Our overarching goal is to effect meaningful change in education within Flanders, adapting it to contemporary needs. We seek to inspire other educational institutions not only through professional development and visits to our operational schools but also by taking a leading role in initiatives such as warm schools and the motivation monitor for teachers. Through these efforts, we aim to facilitate a broader transformation in education, enabling young people to emerge from secondary school as well-rounded, motivated, and independent individuals.
