Meeting Global LNG Demand with Innovative FLNG Solutions
As global demand for LNG surges and the need to monetize stranded gas reserves intensifies, EXMAR is at the forefront of delivering innovative LNG infrastructure solutions. Our Floating Liquefaction Units (FLNG) are designed to bring LNG to market in a fast-track, cost-effective, flexible, and reliable manner.
EXMAR’s FLNG systems significantly reduce time-to-market by offering floating liquefaction and storage solutions that are both cost-efficient and adaptable. These units are ideal for gas fields located both onshore and offshore, eliminating the necessity for large, expensive land-based infrastructure and lengthy permitting requirements.
Building on Proven Success with TANGO FLNG
Leveraging the extensive experience gained from the TANGO FLNG project, EXMAR’s LNG team is actively pursuing a variety of floating liquefaction opportunities at different stages of development.
Our dedication to innovation is reflected in the significant engineering man-hours invested in developing a broad range of FLNG concepts and designs, with capacities ranging from 0.5 to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Key advantages of EXMAR’s FLNG solutions include:
- Fast-Track Implementation: Reduced construction times—down to less than 36 months for a converted unit and 48 months for a new build—thanks to our partnerships with world-class shipyards.
- Scalable Design: Ready-to-deploy designs with throughput capacities between 0.5 and 5 MTPA, allowing for adjustment to varying upstream reserves. EXMAR has received Approval In Principle for several of its FLNG designs.
- Cost Competitiveness: Close collaboration with leading shipyards ensures a CAPEX cost of less than $600 per ton and tolling fees below those of U.S. export projects. Additionally, our solutions offer significantly lower auto-consumption compared to standard alternatives.
- Flexibility and Bankability: By leveraging the construction capabilities of top-tier shipyards and our in-house FLNG operational expertise, EXMAR offers a bankable structure with FLNG units that are easily redeployable.
- Optimized operability and maintainability: the operational experience gained by Exmar Shipmanagement’s team and its involvement since early stages provides valuable input to the new designs to ensure improved operability and maintainability.
Stakeholder & Government relations: Building and maintaining strong relationships with government authorities and local communities is crucial for FLNG project success. Thereby helping to secure permits, navigate regulatory landscapes, and align with national energy strategies. Strong community engagement ensures social acceptance and addresses local concerns. Together, these efforts enhance the project’s social license to successfully operate.
TANGO FLNG: A Proven Success Story
TANGO FLNG, a floating LNG terminal designed to liquefy natural gas, has demonstrated its reliability by operating above its nameplate capacity for over 1.5 years in Argentina, exporting shale gas from the Vaca Muerta formation.
TANGO FLNG, which has been sold to ENI in 2022, was brought into operational condition in record time together with EXCALIBUR FSU. TANGO FLNG, with a liquefaction capacity of approximately 1 billion m³/year of gas, was originally designed for benign conditions with limited storage capacity. The EXCALIBUR LNG carrier was repurposed as a permanent storage unit (FSU) for the terminal. EXMAR’s teams were tasked with developing a mooring solution to position TANGO FLNG offshore Congo, accommodating the challenging environmental conditions and tight project timeline. As the EPC contractor, EXMAR designed the mooring system and oversaw refurbishments on both vessels, showcasing our comprehensive expertise across the entire LNG value chain.
