EXMAR marks a landmark milestone with the naming of the world\u2019s first ocean-going ammonia dual fuel mid-size gas carriers<\/strong> (MGCs), the culmination of a joint development program initiated more than three and a half years ago with HD Hyundai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 46,000 m\u00b3 vessels named ANTWERPEN and ARLON \u2014 each comprising 45,000 m\u00b3 cargo tanks and two 500 m\u00b3 deck tanks \u2014 are purpose-built in close cooperation with the yard. Through a deliberate extension of the vessel\u2019s length by 10 metres and a slight increase in beam, we achieved a meaningfully higher cargo intake<\/strong> compared to the standard design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety at the Core<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The safety of seafarers is EXMAR\u2019s top priority<\/strong>. The vessel\u2019s design reflects extensive collaboration through workshops, risk assessments, and rigorous technical reviews, supported by input from EXMAR\u2019s experienced seafarers with decades of ammonia cargo expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working closely with Lloyd\u2019s Register and the Administration, EXMAR actively contributed to advancing the IMO regulatory framework, enabling guidelines for the use of ammonia as fuel on gas carriers \u2014 a critical step for the entire industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental and Operational Impact<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ammonia dual fuel technology enables CO\u2082 emission reductions of up to 90%<\/strong> during navigation. The ability to use cargo as fuel represents significant operational flexibility and environmental advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vessel is the product of a multi-partner development program involving HD Hyundai, HHI-EMD, W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 Gas Solutions, WinGD, Lloyd\u2019s Register, and EXMAR. Propulsion systems have undergone extensive testing at HD Hyundai\u2019s facilities over a significant number of operating hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s naming ceremonies mark an important milestone<\/strong> in EXMAR\u2019s four decades of ammonia and LPG transportation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
