The 1800s and 1900s – the seeds of EXMAR are sewn along the banks of the River Scheldt<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EXMAR’s origins emanate from the banks of the river Scheldt, with the emergence of a humble yard for building wooden river craft in 1829 into a major industrial wharf which constructed the largest inland waterway vessel of its kind in Europe in 1911 – the 112 metre GRAAF DE SMET-DE NAYER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1829 Bernard Boel<\/strong> built the company’s first ever keel, founding a shipbuilding wharf for small wooden river craft of 50 to 80 tons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1872, he passed away, leaving his son, Jozef Boel<\/strong>, to take over the yard. Under his leadership, the yard became  more commercial, with the expansion of the Wharf in 1890 to accommodate the first hangar. More orders came in, larger tonnages were built, different building techniques were mastered and the number of employees rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1904 Jozef Boel\u2019s sons, C\u00e9sar<\/strong> and Frans Boel<\/strong>, took over the company under the name Gebroeders Boel<\/em><\/strong> (Brothers Boel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1911 represented a milestone for the company. The 112 metres-long \u201cGRAAF DE SMET-DE NAYER\u201d was built , with an exceptionally high deadweight for that period. It was the largest inland waterway vessel of Europe at that time. From 200 employees on its payroll in 1914, by 1930 the total grew to 680.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frans Boel\u2019s entrepreneurship brought the shipyard to an unprecedented success, with the yard securing over 950 orders between 1904 and 1943.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
